❝ not much is known about castiel's life before he rebelled against his bretheren in heaven. like most angels, castiel was created by yahweh to protect and fight against hell. having little to no agency in heaven, castiel learned how to accept orders like a good soldier. upon the command of his older siblings, he was given the assignment to rescue dean winchester from hell to prevent lilith from breaking the 66 seals.on earth, castiel took to protecting dean winchester and his brother, sam, joining them in their hunts on occasion. eventually, castiel learned that his siblings wished to free lucifer from his cage. angered by the revelation, castiel rebelled against his siblings, much to the disdain of his angelic bretheren. now considered an enemy, castiel was cast out of heaven's grace and killed while helping dean prevent sam from breaking the final seal. castiel would later be resurrected by archangel raphael and join the winchester's on their quest to prevent the brothers from becoming the vessels of michael and lucifer. during the journey, castiel would be killed for a second time by lucifer, but his actions willed the archangels to be trapped away, narrowly averting the apocalypse.

now back in heaven, castiel was resurrected again by his father and promoted to a seraph. still resentful toward his older brother, castiel began a civil war to try and prevent raphael from restarting the apocalypse. castiel overestimated himself and teamed up with crowley to claim the souls of purgatory. if he was as powerful - if not more so - than raphael, then perhaps he could stop him.castiel ended up tricking and betraying crowley in the midst of their partnership, absorbing all of the souls to ascend to godhood. he let the power get to his head and briefly turned against the winchester brothers. due to the strain on his body, castiel's vessel - jimmy novak - had begun rotting. he finally agreed to give up the souls as per dean's advice. in turn, this willed a powerful leviathan to cling onto his body and later take control of his vessel. castiel ended up assuming the identity of a man named emmanuel and taking on sam's pain from his experience in hell, eventually falling into a coma after. his sanity is restored later on when he teams up with the brothers once again against dick roman, but is trapped in purgatory with dean. while dean escapes, he doesn't leave to punish himself for his mistakes.

▍ ❝   THE ENDVERSE.
the endverse is a timeline shown in 05x04, where the world has been ravaged by the croatoan virus amidst lucifer's reign over humanity using sam winchester's body as a vessel. in this timeline, castiel is a trashy and perverted mockery of the angel he'd formerly been. he's most prominently pessimistic, viewing everything as useless now that the world is going to end anyhow. he still expresses a level of care for people -- most notably, dean winchester, who castiel still loves despite the former's explicit hatred towards him.

▍ ❝   APOCALYPSE WORLD.
the apocalypse world is the universe in which dean and sam aren't born to prevent the apocalypse from happening. in this universe, castiel is a soldier within michael's army. since this castiel was not exposed to human kindness, kinship or morality, he's infamously sadistic and lacks compassion in any way, shape, or form. he operates like a soldier -- it's all he's known.

▍ ❝   THE NEW GOD.
what if, when castiel ascended to godhood after consuming the leviathans, he didn't have to let them go and instead persisted? castiel ursurps heaven's throne and reimagines heaven in his image -- how he thinks it should've always been. castiel is a generous leader when he wants to be, but he runs heaven with the might of an ironclad fist. anybody defying him or his laws is punished as he sees fit -- in death or worse.
